September 2026 / Rosh Hashana 5787
Preface

What a wonderful way to kick off the new year: with 20 gorgeous stories, more than half of them translated from other languages! The stories in this issue were originally written in 7 languages: Russian, Hungarian, Serbian, Spanish, Ladino, Hebrew, and English. And in honour of the upcoming holiday, the story “Air in the Shape of a Girl” is about Rosh Hashana, as it is experienced by a young, single, ultra-Orthodox woman who longs for love and marriage.

This rich, diverse, and passionate collection will feed your mind, heart, and soul, and bring you pleasure and inspiration.

Speaking of pleasure and inspiration, we have thrilling news to share: For the second time in four years, a story from Jewish Fiction has won a Pushcart Prize! “The Wing Man,” by Jake Wolff (from Issue 41), will appear in the next Pushcart Prize anthology. The Pushcart is an extremely prestigious literary award, created to recognize the best writing published by small presses, so it is a huge honour for Jewish Fiction to receive this recognition not only once but twice. Mazal tov, Jake, and mazal tov, Jewish Fiction! We are jubilant and very proud.

To you and your loved ones we wish a joyful holiday and a year of health, happiness, fruitful endeavours, and many blessings.
